So, How Weird is Nissan’s New ‘Tire Perfume?’

These days, many brands want to get into the fragrance game. This is very true among celebrities. But for an automotive company to go this route, we have to start asking some tough questions. Nissan’s new “Smell My Dust” perfume has officially launched. And this is not a joke – it’s totally real.

Established in 1933 and headquartered in Yokohama, Japan, Nissan is one of the most iconic automotive companies in the world. It’s known for pioneering electric vehicles in 2010 before most car dealerships were in that game. However now they’ve entered the perfume game.

Smell My Dust does in fact smell of tires. But it also smells like cherry blossoms which is due to Japan being famous for them in the spring. The notes in Smell My Dust are utterly bizarre. And to make it more absurd, Nissan isn’t making the bottles available yet so we’re all just hanging around trying to figure out what this fragrance experience will be like.

This hoopla seems to surround the Formula E race in Shanghai where Nissan will enter the first electric vehicle. The thinking is that Nissan is trying to get a little more PR play with Smell My Dust.

But don’t think for a second that Nissan wasn’t serious about this fragrance endeavor. Nissan worked in a lab to come up with the scent, using actual tire speckles.

And there’s more…

Nissan has an entire line of perfumes as Nissanperfume.com. They market their fragrances as “defining attitudes and lifestyle.” Imagine sporting some 350Z or Armada to your next cocktail dinner or wedding. All of Nissan’s perfumes are crafted by celebrity perfumer Rafael.

If you don’t think they are serious, check out the description for Nissan 350Z:

Dive into this ocean of freshness! A cooling fragrance made of aromatic notes and cold spices. A sensation of freedom and purity conveyed by the pure trail of white woods & clear amber magnifies this classical masculine fragrance. Top notes: Mint, kumquat, coriander. Heart: Lavender, geranium, neroili-rose. Base: Amber, cedarwood, musks – oak moss

We can’t imagine turning up to smell like tire dust to any event other than Nascar. But maybe we’ve got it all wrong because this seems far beyond a joke. When Smell My Dust samples are available, we’ll do our best to get our hands on some.
