NFT Perfume Arrives & It’s Somehow Not a Joke

What if I told you that an NFT perfume hit the market yesterday. What if I told you that I already told you that via the headline. I think we can stop with my attempted, uncouth wordplay. Instead, we should focus on the fact that an NFT perfume is about to launch, and it’s a serious thing.

There’s a lot to unpack here, so let’s get started.

The name of the NFT perfume is L’Eau de Distance. The name sounds much like a joke; instead, it’s a serious brand name hopeful of more than viral fame (or shame). Like most NFTs with any value, it’s a limited edition.

NFT stands for Non-fungible token. Built using blockchain technology typically applied to baseball cards and modern art, an NFT is fully verifiable and traceable. This means, if you own a limited edition NFT anything, collectors can validate that NFT’s value. Moreover, the original creator of the NFT can collect residuals in perpetuity.

The NFT concept, while mocked by many, pans out as quite ingenious and sophisticated. It’s a marvel of modern technology. But can it serve as the backbone of a fragrance? Can you smell an NFT?

New York-based visual artist Danilo Lauria, the creator of L’Eau de Distance, isn’t new to this NFT scent game. He began playing around with the concept in Barcelona back in the spring of 2020.

“We are seeing how the digital world is gaining weight every day: Augmented reality, cryptocurrencies, remote work… That’s why we thought it was time to open the conversation of the virtual scent,” Lauria told Flaunt.com.

Lauria intends to break down barriers in the perfume world while conceiving a basic concept: the scent of cryptocurrency.

There were only 10 of these NFTs made available, each costing 10 Tezos. That’s roughly $1600 per bottle when you break down the value of Tezos versus the dollar. But, of course, that’s assuming you know what a Tezos is. This is no doubt the most confusing perfume launch in history.

But, the future is here, like it or not.
